The Friendswood ISD Education Foundation (FEF) surprised the Friendswood ISD Therapeutic Education Center (TEC) on Monday, August 10, with a $115,000 Legacy Grant that will help create a new outdoor learning and wellness space designed specifically for TEC students.

Located inside the FISD Annex at 402 Laurel Drive, the TEC is a day school partnership between Friendswood ISD, Alvin ISD, and Pearland ISD. The program serves students with autism, low-incidence disabilities, and/or emotional disabilities who require extensive self-contained behavioral support and have progressed through all other in-district options within their home district’s scope of services. Through individualized educational and behavioral support, the TEC works to help students build the skills and make the progress needed to successfully transition back to their home campus.

The Legacy Grant will support the development of an outdoor space where students can engage in hands-on learning, movement, sensory activities, and opportunities for connection. The new space will provide TEC students with an additional environment to learn, explore, and grow while supporting their individual educational and wellness needs.

The grant was made possible through the generosity of The U Foundation, whose commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for students continues to make a lasting impact in the Friendswood community. Mirna Herr and her son, Noah Herr, a sophomore at Friendswood High School, joined the celebration to surprise TEC staff and personally present the $115,000 Legacy Grant.

“Seeing the U Foundation’s support come to life through this Legacy Grant is incredibly meaningful to me. Our mission has always been about turning success into significance and creating opportunities that make a lasting difference in people’s lives. Knowing this grant will give Friendswood ISD students a space where they can learn, grow, connect and thrive makes this especially rewarding. As a mother and a member of this community, I’m proud that The U Foundation can help create something that will impact students for years to come,” said Mirna Herr.

The grant was revealed during a surprise celebration at TEC on August 10, where FEF staff, district leaders, and supporters gathered to share the news with TEC staff. The celebration highlighted the power of community support and the difference that can be made when local families and organizations invest in Friendswood ISD students and educators.

FEF Legacy Grants represent more than a financial contribution. They are an investment in innovative programs, resources, and spaces that can make a lasting impact across the district. Legacy Grants are made possible through FEF’s Endowment Fund and Century Club, as well as direct philanthropic support from individuals, families, and organizations committed to enhancing educational opportunities throughout Friendswood ISD.

FEF extends its sincere appreciation to The U Foundation for its extraordinary generosity and commitment to Friendswood ISD. This support will leave a lasting legacy at the Therapeutic Education Center and help create a space where TEC students can learn, connect, and thrive for years to come.
